Today Is World Environment Day. And We Have Reason to Rejoice!

Established over 50 years ago at the first ever global environmental conference in Stockholm, World Environment Day is one of the UN’s days of commemoration.

Each year the event is hosted by a different country and each year a different issue, usually a pressing one, is discussed in great depth.

We would like to turn it around and on this important day boast about the first successes of our restoration of the wetland near the village of Maříž in the Czech Canada region.

The intervention, during which a lot of dredging was done under the supervision of experienced ecologist Filip Lysák (we got rid of the drainage system and removed sod with accumulated old growth), took place a year and a half ago (more on our work here). Since then, we have been mowing the site intensively.

The results?

Already this year, the first small signs of success are appearing on parts of the site consisting of wet meadows, showing that everything we did was worth it.

We were pleased to see the first recorded emergence of bogbeans and march valerians, or the large proliferation of cottongrass (see photos in the gallery). These plants were struggling before we began improving the site. Similarly to other remnants of even rarer species, they were drowning in monotonous stands of club-rush and phalaris.

Today, these meadows are a significantly richer habitat—every square meter is more floriferous and covered with a wide variety of plants. In short, a beautiful sight. And we know that even more significant changes are still to come!

At the same time, zoological surveys are being carried out on the site for the first time after the restoration efforts, the results of which we will share with you soon.
